<headline>Lighting Up Lowers</headline>
<longdesc>After lackluster conditions in 2007, the fabled cobblestone A-frame
returned with a new look for 2008. Thanks to a pulsating southwest
swell and Nike 6.0 laced up as the title sponsor, Lower Trestles
dazzled plenty of worthy competitors with what every one came for --
roping rights, launch-ramp lefts and fun in the California sun.

There was boatloads of drama the entire week, but by the end of the
final day everything appeared as it should be, at least if you're
looking for a storybook ending. A pair of WCTers finished first and
second. Local favorite Pat Gudauskas jumped back on top of the WQS
ratings. Sebastian "Seabass" Zietz claimed a Pro Junior win at his
sponsor's event. Underdog, 16-year-old Kiron Jabour, made the semis in
the main event. And hard-hitting, double-dipping Dusty Payne was
rewarded the wildcard for the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge in
Bali.

Tim DaSilva from Milton, Ontario was a superstar BMX racer that was bound for the Olympics one day. His passion lead him to designing and building the ultimate BMX track that he felt would take riders to a new level and play a part in the growth of the sport he loved so much.
Unfortunately, during the building of his track an accident occurred and Tim passed away while building his dream. Since then his friends and family came together and finished the track for him. The track opened up last year and was well on its way to success.

Tim died in a tragic accident while building his dream; a BMX race track; a place for children, youth and their families to enjoy, exercise, companionship and the spirit of competition.
On Sunday, the women’s field dropped to 90 riders from the 140 that raced in the first two rounds of the World Cups. The opening lap was a fast one with Marie-Helene Premont (CAN), Gunn Rita Dahle Flesjå (NOR), and Marga Fullana (SPA) setting a pace that no one else could match. Gould fought hard to bridge to the leaders but by the second lap was alternating the front position in a small chase group of four.

<headline>BMX Race Riders Emerge as Ones to Watch Leading Into Beijing</headline>
<longdesc>With the Olympic Games in Beijing only two months away, the excitement
for the debut of BMX Race is mounting daily. Among a strong group of
contenders from both the men's and women's sides, two riders have
emerged as the ones to watch as the US Team chases its dreams of
Olympic Gold.

For the men, the rider to watch is Mike Day. With a string of successes
over the last three years including the 2005 NBL #1 Pro, 2005 UCI
Worlds 2nd Place, 2006 UCI Worlds 3rd Place, and the 2007 UCI
Supercross 1st Place, Mike has been on a tear leading up to Olympic
qualification. The fastest rider on Olympic style tracks, Mike has won
every time trial on the UCI Supercross circuit for the last year and a
half. Crediting his monster speed to his longer than average legs, Mike
also clocked the fastest time of any athlete on the Beijing Supercross
track during last year's test races. To say he has an advantage there
would be an understatement. GT BMX Race Team Manager Eric Rupe had this
to say about Mike, "Hands down, Mike Day is the best rider in BMX
racing today. He makes it look so easy and effortless, as if he's just
play riding. Nobody can match his skill... NOBODY."
<longdesc>
Team ATV World Yamaha came away with
convincing results at this weekend's round six
of the 2008 ACU British MMX Quad Championship.
With John Mitchell back on form, he took overall
joint first and Paul Holmes put in another
consistent result finishing a fantastic third
 overall.

With good weather, the Dean Moor track looked
well prepared and ready for qualifying. John
Mitchell qualified in third place and Paul
Holmes took sixth. Race one was initially red
flagged after a crash blocked the track. On the
restart, John took the holeshot and began to
create a gap between first and second place.
Paul Holmes was in fifth after the start but
very quickly moved into second place with an
excellent display of quick cornering and tidy
riding. Half way through, he came off his quad
and rejoined in fourth place. Quickly catching
up, Holmes then passed Tordoff and made his way
up to Winrow. As Holmes and Winrow battled for
position, Tordoff passed Holmes only to be
retaken on the last lap. Meanwhile, John won the
 race about 40 seconds ahead.
<headline>International Campaigners Post Big Scores at Day 2 Honda U.S. Open of Surfing</headline>
<longdesc>Huntington Beach -- The GO211 LIVE featuring the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing presented by O’Neill completed the Round of 144 today and an international contingent of top talent posted some of the highest scores in event history today, reveling in the glassy three-to-four foot (1 metre) waves on offer at Huntington Beach Pier.

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star event narrowed its field down to 96 competitors today, moving one day closer to crowing this year’s 2008 Honda U.S. Open champion. The heat of the day was the high-flying shootout between ASP WQS combatants Jadson Andre (Natal, BRA) and Torrey Meister (Kona, HI), both exchanging consecutive near-perfect rides in their Round 2 clash.

Andre earned an impressive score of a 9.23 in the opening seconds of his Round 2 heat with a series of powerful maneuvers to get the round started. The young surfer from Brazil then followed up his excellent score with a perfect 10 out of 10 point ride for punting a massive no-grab frontside air on what looked to be a closeout wave.

 <headline>GM unveils 'fuel-sipping' Camaro</headline>
<longdesc>When unveiling new performance models, car companies usually boast
about horsepower, engine size and expected zero-to-60 times.

But when General Motors unveiled the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Monday
afternoon, it was the car's fuel economy numbers that were front and
center.

It's the return of a once-popular model that has been out of production
since the 2002 model year. V6 versions, which GM expects will be the
biggest sellers, are expected to get 26 miles per gallon on the
highway. That's about the same as a V6 Ford Mustang, while boasting the
same horsepower output as a V8 Mustang.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 August, 2008 : - - Somewhere, Indonesia; - Bruce Irons (HAW) has defeated fellow finalist Fredrick Patacchia (HAW) to claim the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Search in rifling four-foot (1.5 metre) lefthanders ‘somewhere’ in Indonesia. Stop No. 6 of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search saw a marathon day of action capped off by a stunning barrel shootout finale between the young Hawaiians.

Irons, who took down reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) and Dream Tour sophomore Ben Dunn (AUS) en route to his Finals berth, came from behind in last 10 minutes of the event, grabbing an 8.33 and a 9.33 to scalp his first ASP World Tour victory.

“One of my goals when I joined the Tour was to win an event and I wasn’t sure if it was going to happen since I’ll be stepping away after this season,” Irons said. “But the waves pumped this event! This is what the Dream Tour should be like all the time. I’m definitely stepping away from the ASP Tour at the end of this year, but I’m not retiring. I’m still planning on competing at Pipeline and Teahupoo and at venues that I can get into.”

<headline>BMX's unpredictability makes it a predictable success at Olympics</headline>
 <longdesc>

BEIJING -- If we've learned anything over the past few days, it is that anything can happen at any time. It's a lesson we're supposed to pick up as kids, the first time we're blowing away a group of fifth graders in a race at recess only to trip 10 yards from the finish. The reality is, sometimes our expectations get the better of us.

As we watched the previously undefeated U.S. women's softball team step onto the silver-medal podium Thursday night, or the men's and women's 4x100 relay teams drop batons on their final handoffs, or Tyson Gay and Shawn Johnson fall short of the expectations thrust upon them before arriving in Beijing, we shouldn't have acted so surprised. Some days, David beats Goliath. Clean triumphs over dirty. Heart succeeds over strength. It is why we watch sports.

And it is the reason BMX will succeed at the Olympics.
